We are spending the first two nights on Maui in a lovely rental "cottage"- found on vrbo.com- in Kula (right at the base of Haleakala Highway). We packed breakfast and a picnic lunch and headed up to Haleakala at 4 am our first morning on the island, in order to catch the 6:04 am sunrise. Unfortunately, Corey and I didn't receive the "memo" about the terrible weather blanketing Haleakala approximately 8000 ft and higher. We were wondering why it wasn't very crowded on the way up! At the summit we got a great parking spot, but it was drizzling, and cold, and with absolutely no visibility. We waited it out, hoping that it would clear up in time for the sunrise, but alas, it did not. Lucky us, apparently we arrived in time for the first rain in a month, and just the second rain in 3 months! Not to be disheartened- we are on Maui after all!- we changed plans and went to Kula for breakfast at Cafe 808 (mini loco moco for me, and country breakfast with portugese sausage for Corey) saving our sandwiches for the next day, took a nap, and drove to Ali'i Kula lavender.
We wandered around the fragrant farm while it continued to drizzle on us. Corey commented that this is the most rain he has seen in a year. I caved in and bought some lavender goodies at the well-stocked gift shop. We continued on further North, and down the mountain a bit to Makawao, a quaint town with galleries and gift stores (right up Corey's alley). :) I bought some soaps and signed prints. We bought some vegetable spring rolls and inari sushi at Foodland and ate these along with Zippy's chili and rice for dinner in our rental house.
Here's a picture on our way down Haleakala when there was a break in the clouds (and rain). Still a beautiful and fun day nonetheless. We have one more night in our rental house in Kula, so Haleakala, you may have won this round, but we shall meet again...soon.
