Today after breakfast, we drove to the Queenstown Botanical Gardens, enjoyed the rose gardens and walked into town, stopping for a Mochaccino at a McCafe. We then drove on to Te Anau about 3 hours away. We stopped at a VERY small town with a cafe and bought egg salad sandwiches, chips (real chips, not fries) and a slice of carrot cake.
Denise drove for a good portion of the trip to Te Anau while Corey napped- it was flat and fairly straight, but she kept forgetting that the signals are on the other side, and kept turning on the windshield wipers. In Te Anau, we booked our lodging in Twizel, the Milford Sound cruise tomorow, and our TranzAlpine train rides on our last day in New Zealand. Unfortunately the young lady at the i-site mistakenly booked us for one-way tickets rather than round trip train tickets, so we checked in to Rosie's Backpacker Homestay while she sorted things out. We're just glad she caught it before we ended up stuck in Greymouth!
We walked around "downtown" Te Anau, which was only one street long, and watched a beautiful 32 minute movie at the local cinema about Fiordland. Lots of spectacular shots from a helicopter, which made us very excited to see it in person tomorrow! We ate pasta at La Toscana, bought groceries from Fresh Choice, and nearly had a panic attack when we logged onto the computer at the homestay and saw that there were very few places to stay in Christchurch. We managed to book a reasonably-priced motel room in nearby Ricarton, close to the train station, after 45 minutes of panicked searching online. It feels good to have everything for the rest of the trip booked- Corey thinks that the credit card bill will be ridiculous when we get home. It's still amazing all the places we've been and things we've seen over the past two weeks.
